Our Organisation

In our organisation we have two main types of job roles for our 5,000+ employees. There are police officer roles with a headcount of just over 3,000 people, and corporate function (police staff) roles where we have around 2,500 people employed.

Police Officer and Specialist Departments

Alongside our local policing teams, we also have a range of specialist departments. Some of these include:

Dog Unit – Our Dog Training Unit is known not only throughout the country but globally, thanks to its world-class training courses.

Mounted Branch – We are one of just a few forces across the whole country to have a mounted section. Our horses live at our police stables and each horse has his own stable and is named after a Lancashire town and the Queen’s Jubilee and Preston Guild.

Serious Crime Team – Organised Crime can take many different guises, from sophisticated drugs importation and supply networks to high-profit environmental crime and professional money laundering used to legitimise criminal income. This team consists of highly trained dedicated and experienced Police Officers and Police Staff.

Force Major Investigation Team (FMIT) – FMIT provides a highly professional and specialised investigative response to major crime, including cases of murder, manslaughter, kidnap, extortion and stranger rape. Additionally, they provide advice and assistance across the county to officers in relation to other serious crime and critical incidents.
