Introducing Finance

Our Finance and Procurement department is a critical part of our organisation. We manage income and expenditure for the constabulary, as well as supporting the strategic decision-making process. We’re focused on getting the best possible use out of available resources without compromising on quality, while maintaining compliance with policy and procedures, and transparent reporting.

MEET THE TEAMS

This team has an internal focus, managing the Constabulary’s revenue and capital budgets, reporting to budget holders and supplying the information required to help with decision making and medium-term financial planning.

The Financial Accounts team has an external focus, so they are responsible for reporting to grant funders, collaboration partners and central government. Another key part of the team’s role is to publish the statement of accounts.

Members of the Procurement team work with suppliers and internal and external stakeholders to set up contracts for goods and services to be supplied to the Constabulary.

The Transaction Processing team is responsible for raising purchase orders, paying suppliers and collecting any income that is due to the Constabulary.

Nitin Vaja

Job title: Accountant

Length of service: 7 years

I started as a Finance Assistant and was given the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship to become a Chartered Accountant taking my skills to the next level. I was promoted to Assistant Accountant and then reached my goal of becoming a qualified Accountant. I have had a mentor who has supported me from day one, providing me with development opportunities to help me gain skills and experience to progress my career and meet my ambitions.

Rather than just crunching numbers, you’re addressing the challenges of delivering operational policing. Even though you are a small cog in a larger machine you can see the difference you have made.

Robert Wilson

Job title: Finance Assistant

Length of service: 1 year 8 months

The most interesting thing about my job is the variety of jobs and tasks that can come up in the month. You are not doing just one thing and you can see all aspects of policing. Everyone is really friendly and are willing to help each other out when needed.

I am on track to become a fully qualified accountant in the next few years. My focus at the Constabulary has mainly been on getting practical experience. I have been picking up as much as possible to grow my knowledge of everything that goes on. I am hoping that soon I’ll have the opportunity to move up and broaden my experiences. Every time I am comfortable with a new task, I have the opportunity to learn another process that goes on.
